[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]HISTORICAL AND MONUMENTAL HERITAGE

This town was a fortified site and there are still some remains of its ancient and strong walls. Among its buildings and most significant features include:

The palace of the Dukes of Alba, made for them in the middle of the XVIII century by J.Marquet, French architect, who is an example of classicist Baroque of France and presents an impressive size. Before the palace opens a large courtyard of honor and behind a large garden that must have been of great beauty. This palace is formed by a large central body and two smaller wings closing the courtyard of honor. In front of the garden, the mountains that Goya would leave reflected in some of his paintings, such as the Vendimia, rise up. Also close to these gardens is the convent of Santo Domingo founded at the end of the 14th century and of which the walls and the head of the Church are preserved.

The Parochial Church, always coveted by precious storks, that in its times was a palace in which Fernando III the Saint was born. Its construction dates from the thirteenth century. When it was converted into a church, an arcade was added on the south side and a cloister on the west side. It consists of 3 naves separated by semicircular arches that rest on large columns. All these ships are covered by barrel vaults. The altar is decorated with a very ornate baroque altarpiece in which we must highlight in the upper part an image of Saint Teresa, work of Gregorio Hernández.

Ruins of the convent of Santo Domingo, where he remained for several years Fr. Antonio González, a Dominican stone-beatified by John Paul II, who entered the Dominican order where he studied Philosophy and Theology until he was assigned to the convent of Dominicans in Piedrahita as a reader of Theology until he was appointed Director of the seminarians of the Convent.

Old cemetery, located inside the convent of Santo Domingo, is moving and unique and a true architectural gem. Only its front and main entrance of stone of ashlar masonry and its magnificent banked arch of access, with solid wrought iron gate, as well as its other adjoining door of equal characteristics, would deserve the greatest care of the provincial and regional organisms of Culture. This cemetery is home to a small chapel of undoubted value where the remains of Hernando Álvarez de Toledo, Lord of Valdecorneja and Marshal of Castile rest, together with those of his wife Leonor de Ayala, founders of the aforementioned convent of Santo Domingo. The main exterior apse of this chapel is a great and extremely precious work, as well as some altars converted into stone sarcophagi and innumerable points of support for the coffered ceiling and arches that surrounded an interior courtyard for walk and meditation for the monks.

Virgen de la Vega, in whose honor Piedrahita celebrates its main festivals in the second week of September, and is in itself the most important and most beloved dedication of Piedrahita. For this reason, their various embroidered mantles and their jewels of jewels have a artistic merit, a gift from the Piedrahitenses. This virgin has also motivated many poets, such as Gabriel and Galán, who dedicated some verses to our Virgin.

The Clock of the Villa, that was necessary to regulate the tasks of Piedrahita, is placed in a tower next to the bell in the present City council, and was realized in 1439 by Diego Martinez of the Arrabe, neighbor of Piedrahita.
